Originaire, et toujours résident, de l’ile de Sainte Lucie, Taj Weekes est un artiste en devenir mais qui à déjà acquis une solide réputation dans le monde du reggae.

Son nouvel album : DEIDEM est nominé aux Grammy Awards 2009 dans la catégorie Reggae roots. Ce serait bien (et mérité) qu’un nom inconnu du grand public sorte de l’ombre via les Awards. Ca changerait des Marley habituels… Même si le talent de ces derniers n’est pas à remettre en cause.

Cet album sonne donc très roots & conscious. Le son est propre et soigné, les mélodies font mouche et surtout les textes sont puissants et poignants. Notamment le remarquable « Orphan’s cry » qui parle des massacres perpétués au Darfour. Angry Language, Little Fire, We Stand, For Today, Louisiana… Sont autant de petite perles aux textes délicats et aux mélodies posées et efficaces. On pensera inévitablement à Marley, non pas qu’on trouve forcément une similitude flagrante au niveau mélodie. Cela est plus la conséquence de l’implication de l’artiste dans ses textes… Le parallèle, pour les mêmes raisons sus-citées, avec d’autres artistes comme par exemple Pablo Moses, Burning Spear ou l’Africain Tiken Jah Fakoly est à faire.

Et le plus de Taj Weekes, c’est sa voix, qui semble inébranlable et pourtant si fragile à la fois. Une voix claire, chaleureuse et haut perchée.

Pas de faux pas, donc, sur cet album solide emmené par un artiste sincère qui sait communiquer à l’auditeur toute sa foi, sa détermination, avec la force, la détermination, et l’humilité qui sied aux grands. Servi aussi, il est important de le souligner, par d’excellents musiciens.

Un grand monsieur est donc dans la place… A suivre de très près.

It would be a nice change from the usual Marleys… even though the talent of the latter musicians is beyond doubt.

This album is all roots and conscious awareness. The sound is clean and meticulous, the melodies hit home and above all, the lyrics are poignant and powerful, notably the remarkable Orphans Cry about the Darfur massacres. Angry Language, Little Fire, We Stand, For Today and Louisiana are all small gems of beautifully crafted lyrics and steady, efficient tunes. Marley will inevitably come to mind, not that there are any obvious similarities between their songs. It has more to do with the artist’s involvement in his lyrics. The above-mentioned reasons could be used to draw a parallel with artists such as Pablo Moses, Burning Spear or African singer Tiken Jah Fakoly.

Taj Weekes’ main asset is his voice, a voice that never seems to waver, yet manages to express fragility. A clear, warm and high-pitched voice.

This is a no-fault album by a sincere artist who knows how to convey his faith and determination with the strength and humility that befits greatness. It is also worth mentioning that he is supported by excellent musicians.
